Focus and Scope
History
The Ceylon Medical Journal, is the oldest surviving medical journal in Australasia. It is the only medical journal in Sri Lanka that is listed in the Index Medicus. The CMJ started life way back in 1887 as the organ of the Ceylon Branch of the British Medical Association. Except for a brief period between 1893 and 1904 when it ceased publication, the CMJ or its forbear, the Journal of the Ceylon Branch of the British Medical Association, has been published without interruption up to now. The journal's name changed to the CMJ in 1954.
Mission Statement of the CMJ
To promote the science and art of medicine and betterment of public health.
Key Objectives of the CMJ
- To publish original, important, well-documented and peer-reviewed articles on a diverse range of topics in clinical medicine and the medical sciences.
- To provide clinicians with continuing education in basic and clinical sciences to support informed clinical decisions.
- To improve public health by elevating the quality of medical care and disease prevention, and publishing related research.
- To foster responsible and balanced debate on controversial issues that affect medicine and health care.
- To inform readers about non-clinical aspects of medicine and public health, including the political, philosophical, ethical, legal, environmental, economic, historical and cultural.
- To recognise that, in addition to these specific objectives, the journal has over-arching social responsibilities such as ensuring equity in health care resource distribution, elimination of all types of discrimination, benevolence, patient autonomy etc.
- To recognise that the journal has responsibility to promote the integrity of science.
- To report Sri Lanka Medical Association policy, as appropriate, while maintaining editorial independence, objectivity and responsibility.
- To achieve the highest level of ethical medical journalism and to produce a publication that is timely, credible and enjoyable to read.
Scope of the CMJ
The CMJ is a peer-reviewed journal, and publishes original papers and commentaries which have relevance to medicine and allied sciences.
(i) Papers
Original work concerning the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, management and prevention of disease belong to this category. So do articles on health systems research, health economics and management, and medical ethics.
(ii) Brief Reports
This category includes case reports, reports of drug adverse effects, preliminary reports of drug trials, new patient management methods, and reports of new techniques and devices.
(iii) Leading Articles
Most leading articles are solicited by the editors, and are expert opinions on current topics or commentaries on other papers published in the CMJ.
(iv) Perspectives and Points of View
The CMJ also welcomes essays expressing opinions, presenting hypotheses, broaching controversial issues, clarifying recent advances in the basic sciences, and essays pertaining to medical education, history of medicine, biographical sketches, health politics and patients' rights.
(v) Miscellany
The CMJ will also consider for publication research letters, correspondence, obituaries, and contributions to the picture-story series.
Ethical and Editorial Standards
The CMJ is committed to maintaining and conforming to the editorial and ethical standards recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors.
Status of the CMJ in Sri Lankan Medicine
