Author Guidelines

The Sri Lankan Journal of Anaesthesiology is published bi annually (January and June) by The College of Anaesthesiologists of Sri Lanka.

Instructions to authors
All material submitted for publication should be sent exclusively to the SLJA and once published the copyright belongs to the SLJA.

Material for publication
The material submitted may be

Original research
This should report research related to anaesthesia, pain and intensive care. The paper should not exceed 2000 words, 5 tables or illustrations and 20 references.

Review articles
These would be solicited by the editors and would be expert opinion on current topics. They should not exceed 1500 words 5 tables or illustrations and 20 references.

Case reports
These should be on drug trials, adverse effects, new management methods and use of new techniques and devices and the paper should not exceed 750 words, 5 tables or illustrations and 10 references.

CME articles
They should not exceed 2000 words, 5 tables or illustrations and 20 references.

Submitting manuscripts
All submission should be with a covering letter signed by all the authors stating a) that contents not published elsewhere, b) paper not being submitted elsewhere and c) that copyright is transferred to SLJA on publication. The name, mailing address and E mail address and telephone number/s of author should be included. If there is more than one author, the name of the corresponding author should be mentioned.

Submission by post requires 2 copies and should be addressed to The College of Anaesthesiologists of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Medical Association, 6, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7. Submissions can be done via e mail to anascol@sltnet.lk or online through SLJOL.

Manuscript typing
All parts of manuscript should be typed with double spacing on A4 size paper and in capital and lower case letters. The components should be as title page, abstract, text, references, and tables in numerical sequence.

Abstract for articles should be not more that 250 words and 150 words for a brief report. Use SI units and generic names for drugs.

References should be in the order they are cited in the text and should be indicated in the text of the article by a numerical superscript.

Sample references below are in the style required for the SLJA.

Journals: List all authors when 4 or fewer; if 5 or more, list the first 3 and add et al. The complete name of the journal, year, volume and first and last page numbers are required.

Tables must be typed double-spaced and should be numbered using Arabic numerals in the order cited in the text. Each table should have a title that describes the content.

Figures and photographs should be sent if data cannot be expressed in any other form. These may be in black and white or colour, unmounted, glossy prints in sharp focus and 5” x 7” size. Number in order they are cited in the text.

Ethical responsibilities
Tables, illustrations from previous publications should be accompanied by a letter of permission from the authors/s and editor/s of the publications.

Only persons who have contributed to the intellectual content of paper should be listed as authors.

Financial support obtained and any conflicts of interest should be declared.

Ensure that informed consent has been obtained if human subjects are involved and that appropriate ethical approval is obtained. Photographs of human subjects should not allow identification of the subject.

Selection for publication
All submissions would be subjected to peer review and the editors reserve the right to modify or shorten articles and make editorial corrections.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
