Abstract

Thyroid emergencies though rare, are associated with a high mortality rate. They usually occur in subjects known to have thyroid dysfunction and are precipitated often by recognisable events. A high index of suspicion, early diagnosis and appropriate management in an intensive care setting may help reduce mortality and morbidity. We describe the diagnosis, investigation and managment of thyrotoxic crisis and myxoedema coma in detail below.
