With the availability of PET scan facilities in Sri Lanka, an exciting new avenue for research in psychiatry is now open. Positron Emission Tomography can be used to study in-vivo blood flow, blood volume, oxygen consumption, tissue pH, glucose utilization and the activity of drug receptors in brain cells. PET scans have been used to research a wide range of psychiatric illness including dementia, schizophrenia, depression and anxiety disorders.
