Author Guidelines

Objects
The principal object of this peer review Journal is to provide a medium for the dissemination of the results of research conducted mainly by the academic staff scientists and eminent scholars outside the University to publish research articles and papers, which, in the opinion of the Board of Editors, are deemed to be significant contributions to Science. The journal is circulated to a large number of libraries of universities, Research Institutes and Learned societies throughout the world.

Editorial Policies
Manuscript of research papers, and invited reviews, will be accepted for publication on the understanding that they have not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. By submitting a research paper it is deemed that copyright for the paper is transferred to the Journal by the contributors. After publication, the paper or any prior approval of the board of Editors. A contributor is, however, at liberty to publish his article/ paper in a work of which he is the author/editor or joint - author/ joint-editor.

Language of Publication
The Journal publishes articles written mainly in English. But where a contribution in Sinhala or Tamil or any international language is found to be of exceptional merit, its publication in the original language may be considered.

Frequency
The Journal from 1992 is published once a year in December, articles and papers for publication should be sent to the editor in chief in triplicate.

Refereeing and Editing
All manuscripts submitted for publication will be examined and evaluated by eminent scholars in the field, to determine their suitability for publication. The Board of Editors reserves the right to edit article/papers to conform to the style and format of the Journal.

1. Preparation and Submission of Manuscripts

  • There is no ceiling on the length or articles papers but preference will be given to articles which deal succinctly and precisely with the subject chosen.
  • Each typescript must have main headings, sub-headings if needed and paragraph headings clearly typed. The main headings should be on the left hand side of the page and each main word of the, heading should begin with a capital letter. The sub-headings should be typed on the same side of the page one space to the right and the first word of the-heading should begin with capital letter.
  • All quotation should correspond exactly in wording, spelling, punctuation, etc. to the original. All short quotations (not exceeding fifty words) should be incorporated into the text and should be enclosed in double quotation marks. Long quotations should be set off from the text in single spacing and indented its entirety four spaces from the left marginal line, without quotation marks. At the end of each quotation contributors should indicate the name of the author/s' year in which the work was published and the page in which the quotation is taken from within parenthesis, e.g.(Gilbert, 1979).
  • Contributors are kindly requested to submit an abstract of about 150 words of the entire article/paper giving a clear indication of the nature, methodology scope, results and conclusion of the paper (with title and author's name on it). This should be on a separate of paper. Keywords should be listed below this abstract.
  • Each page of the manuscript should be consecutively numbered.
  • The title of the article / paper should be typed on a separate page with the name of the contributor/ appearing below the title. In case where the title is too long (tuning to more than eight words) contributors should indicate a running title (brief title) on the same page.
  • Order of page:
    Title Page
    Title, author's names and address, followed by the abstract, keywords and running title.
    Introduction and should be numbered as 1.
    Materials and Methods and should be numbered as 2.
    Results and should be numbered as 3.
    Discussion and should be numbered as 4.
    Acknowledgement and should be numbered as 5.
    References and should be numbered as 6.

References within the text must be as follows. Chloroform extract of the fruit of ficus benghalensis has showed anti tumor and antibacterial activities (Mousa, et el.,1994). This reference must be cited as follows.

Three copies of the manuscript must be submitted in the first instance. The author must also indicate two referees, who are senior researchers that could referee the manuscript. There are no page charges for the journal. Once the manuscript is accepted, a soft copy of the manuscript in the accepted version in Microsoft World must be submitted.

2.   Notes
Any explanatory notes should be typed with double spacing on a separate sheet of paper consecutively numbered in Arabic numerals, corresponding to the number in the text.

3.  Illustrations
Diagrams, graphs, drawing, maps, etc. must be clearly drawn, preferably in Indian ink on plain while paper or photo tracing paper, (graphs may be drawn on blue line while paper) and numbered in sequence with Arabic numerals, with an additional copy if possible. When drawing, contributors should bear in mind that the size of the illustration will be reduced to fit the printed page of the Journal which is approx 25-15cms. Each illustration should carry clear and precise legend, which should be drawn or typed on a separate page.

In the case of graphs, the caption of each axis should be lettered parallel to its axis. The contributors should indicate clearly the position of each illustration in the body of the text.

Usually, only black and white photographs are reproduced in the journal except under very special circumstances where it is felt that only a color photograph can bring out the desired meaning of effect. The authors should submit very clear and glossy prints.

4.  Tables
Tables should be submitted on separate sheet of paper and should be numbered consecutively in Roman Numerical. Each table should have very clear headings or legends to enable the reader to understand the general meaning of the table quite readily. Units of measurements, base date for index numbers, and geographical area covered should be clearly indicated. Contributors are also requested to indicate the place of the table in the body of the text.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
